Matteo Corradini, We Set Out Singing. Etty Hillesum, One Train, Ten Songs. Illustrations by Vittoria Facchini

Esther Hillesum, known as Etty, on September 7, 1943, at the age of 29, shared the fate of over one hundred thousand Dutch Jews and was deported to the Nazi extermination camps. Etty dropped a note from the train window, on which she managed to write: "We left singing." The song transformed sadness into joy and tears into celebration, a song that was a prayer for abandonment, letting go, feeling small but loved. "The train pulls away from the station and I detach myself from heavy things. Stay calm and don't cry: we left singing." A vibrant reading of the fate of a woman who, despite her imprisonment, searches for her inner freedom and the meaning of life.
