Lili Boulanger, composer and sister of the great French teacher Nadia Boulanger (whose students included Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Astor Piazzolla), was the first woman in history to win the Prix de Rome, in 1913. Hers, through music, was an intense inner search, imbued with authentic spirituality. "The house is immersed in silence. Lili tries to make as little noise as possible at that hour of the night, when melancholy blossoms in the repose of the body. Lili sits at her desk and holds her pencil. The notes she writes resonate within her, a small Russian doll wrapped in silence."
